Income Inequality
We, as a nation, need to ensure that access to educational and employment opportunities are sufficient to ensure that any American can achieve the American Dream of a decent, productive life for themselves and their families. For too long the American Dream has been allowed to slip away from Americans, as middle class incomes have stagnated, jobs have been lost, savings have been decimated and the equity in homes has plummeted.
Goal: Good Jobs, Wages, and Benefits
Tom believes that the best social program for any individual is a good, steady job with decent wages and benefits. Government can and should be focused on ensuring that America is an opportunity society, in which all individuals willing to learn new skills and work hard have a chance to succeed.
How Tom will make a Difference
Tom believes that we can rebuild the American Dream by getting our priorities right. At present, government officials should put primacy on job creation. Tom will also emphasize investments in quality education for all of our youth, and workforce training and a secure safety net for challenging times. In order to invest in these vital programs, revenues could be garnered by ending tax subsidies for oil companies or ending the Bush era tax cuts.
